A secret gem, hidden in our Bay Hundred midst, is a greenhouse operation named Bay Hundred Botanicals. Celebrating the ten year anniversary of their business this spring, Karen and Bob Simmons offer homegrown annuals, vegetables and shrubs to both the retail and wholesale markets.
With a degree in horticulture from College Park, Karen Simmons started out in the greenhouse business and knew right away that this was the place for her. She and her husband Bob, an entomologist, moved to the Eastern Shore 30 years ago. As caretakers on a large estate nearby, they raised two children and started a wholesale nursery business there that eventually became Bay Hundred Botanicals.
The Simmons start annuals and perennials from seed, plug and bare root; the plant material at Bay Hundred Botanicals is top notch. Bob Simmons also makes hypertufa planters, and in addition to plants, they sell an array of handsome, pre-planted potted displays.
Talbot County residents looking to support local businesses will certainly enjoy the road trip down Rt. 33 to find their 14 acre property on New Rd., between McDaniel and Wittman. Hours are Tuesday through Sunday from 10 – 5.
