Tyniqua Brooks, left, helps Alaleya Emory create Valentine’s Day gifts for the residents of Dixon House.
AmeriCorps member Tyniqua Brooks is serving with Talbot Mentors for the 2012 service year, which runs through September.
An Easton native, Brooks said she was flattered when Executive Director Diana Trams offered her the position. Already familiar with the mentoring organization as a longtime volunteer, Brooks welcomed the opportunity to contribute more significantly to its success when the AmeriCorps opening became available.
Members of AmeriCorps receive a small stipend and educational support in exchange for providing service to local and national nonprofit organizations that fill critical needs within a community. Talbot Mentors matches adult volunteers with Talbot County students, building mentoring relationships that can create lasting benefits to children at impressionable stages of their lives.
Brooks’ responsibilities include helping to plan the many activities and events that Talbot Mentors holds for the participation of the children with their mentors, supporting the success of the relationships. She also is working on service learning opportunities the organization provides for its students, including the upcoming Valentine’s Day event at Dixon House.
Trams expressed her appreciation to AmeriCorps for its support. “We are working on growing the organization and knew we needed additional help,” she explained. “AmeriCorps and Tyniqua are a perfect match for us this year.”
