From February 16 through March 23, 2013, the Academy Art Museum in Easton will offer the class, Illustrating and Writing Children’s Picture Books, by award-winning children’s book illustrator and author Laura Rankin, who will guide students through the basics of this creative process. Students will learn about different kinds of story telling and picture book characteristics, including step-by-step demonstrations about character, plot and scene development and how to plan a book from thumbnail sketches to storyboards and book dummies to final artwork. The class will include demonstrations, written materials, practice exercises and a few homework assignments. Students should bring one or two of their favorite children’s picture books to share with the class, as well as an idea, a favorite fairytale, folktale, or nursery rhyme that they might like to develop into a picture book. The five-week class will be held on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. (no class March 9). The cost is $195 for Museum members and $230 for non-members. For information on any of the Museum’s exhibitions, programs or classes, visit www.academyartmuseum.org or call 410-822-2787.
